PRG HORSES

Finca Moreiras was created with the goal of promoting and helping preserve the Galician Purebred Horse (PRG), a unique native breed that is still considered endangered today. This ancient breed is native to Galicia and can also be found in parts of northern Portugal, where it has been closely connected to local landscapes and traditions for centuries.

Physiology – What Are They Like?

Galician Purebred Horses are distinguished by their moderate size, hardiness and balanced proportions, characteristics that make them unique among European native breeds. Standing between 120 and 145 cm at the withers, they are classified as ponies according to international standards.

They possess a strong and compact build, with broad chests and powerful hindquarters that reflect their endurance and adaptability. Their heads are medium-sized, with a straight or slightly convex profile, while their expressive eyes reflect their intelligence and lively character.

Their legs are strong and well-formed, with exceptionally durable hooves that allow them to move confidently across mountainous and challenging terrain. Coat colours commonly include bay, black and chestnut, while their thick manes and tails add to their distinctive appearance and natural beauty.

These qualities have allowed the breed to thrive for centuries in the rugged landscapes of Galicia, where resilience and sure-footedness are essential.

The History of the Galician Purebred Horse

The origins of the Galician Purebred Horse stretch back centuries and are often linked to the ancient Celtic peoples who inhabited northwestern Iberia. For generations, these horses played an essential role in rural life, assisting with agricultural work, transportation and livestock management.

Over time, they became deeply embedded in Galician culture and traditions, appearing in local celebrations and maintaining a close relationship with the communities that shared the landscape with them. Despite significant social and economic changes throughout the twentieth century, the breed survived thanks to the efforts of breeders and conservation programmes dedicated to preserving its unique genetic heritage.

Today, the Galician Purebred Horse represents not only a living connection to the past, but also an important part of the future of sustainable tourism, rural heritage and the conservation of native breeds. As interest grows in authentic cultural experiences and traditional ways of life, the PRG continues to demonstrate its value as both a symbol of Galicia and an exceptional riding horse adapted to its homeland.
